April Port Massawa1941.

Before reaching Keren we stopped at a transit camp, having lost all my kit I paid a visit to the Quarter-Master Segeant and told him I had lost my kit on the train at Khartoum and he said to me I will not issue you with any more kit! go and pinch somebody else's gear, so as I was going back to my tent I saw a full pack outside a tent looked around picked up the pack and waltzed off with it feeling like a criminal, however nobody shouted and I got away with it.
The next day I arrived back with my battery and met up with my guncrew the ones that were left plus the four spare gunners making a full gun-.team once again.Very shortly after, we go down to Massawa on the coast were we went in to action straight away, our gunfire was returned to us
very promptly one shell exploded very close to us' a gunner along side of me'named Moony got a very bad wound in his thigh, also two of our signallers were killed in the observation post. The action only lasted for a couple of days and a funny thing happened we found the battery bombadier had done a runner and left the battery stores ungarded so we all the gunners I mean! dived into the stores staggered out with stone jars of rum we were drunk for two days !disgraceful!
